Switches are the foundation of most networks, which allow devices (computers, printers, servers) to communicate with each other, as well as with other local networks. There are two basic types of switches, unmanaged and managed. Unmanaged switches work out of the box, can't be configured and are most appropriate for home-networking. Managed switches are configurable, offering greater security, flexibility and capacity.
Managed switches may classified according to discrete roles in a hierarchical internetworking model with three layers: Access, Distribution and Core. Each layer provides specific functions that helps the network designer and architect to optimize and select the right network hardware, software and features.
Managed switches can also be categorized by the usage environment, LAN switches or Datacenter switches. Within datacenters, a new network design, called spine-and-leaf architecture, was developed. The leaf layer consists of access switches that connect to devices such as servers. The spine layer is the backbone of the datacenter network and is responsible for interconnecting all leaf switches.
